A Journey Beyond Academia: Memories from ICOSS 2024 by Dr. Elymar A. Pascual

In October 2024, I was blessed with the opportunity to attend the 11th International Conference on Social Sciences (ICOSS) 2024 in Colombo, Sri Lanka, organized by The International Institute of Knowledge Management (TIIKM). Looking back, I can confidently say that ICOSS 2024 was not only a conference experience for me—it was a meaningful journey filled with learning, friendship, cultural discovery, and unforgettable memories.

As a representative from the Department of Education, Nagcarlan Sub-Office, Laguna, Philippines, I felt deeply honored to participate alongside researchers, educators, and professionals from different countries. Delegates from around fifteen nations attended both physically and virtually, making the conference a truly global gathering of minds. Being surrounded by passionate researchers and presenters inspired me to continue pursuing excellence in research and education.

From the very first session, I realized that ICOSS was more than just presenting studies and listening to lectures. It became a platform where people from different backgrounds exchanged ideas, experiences, and perspectives. Every presentation I attended widened my understanding of Social Sciences, Education, and even Psychology. I admired how researchers openly shared their findings with the common goal of contributing to knowledge and improving society.

One thing I appreciated most about ICOSS was the opportunity to build meaningful connections. Conferences often begin formally, but they eventually become spaces where friendships are formed. During my stay in Sri Lanka, I reunited with dear Sri Lankan friends whom I first met in Malaysia a year earlier. Seeing them again in Colombo filled my heart with joy and gratitude. It reminded me that academic conferences create bonds that extend far beyond the conference hall.

At the same time, I met wonderful individuals from Indonesia, India, Nepal, Japan, Malaysia, South Africa, and Sri Lanka. Every conversation became an opportunity to learn not only about research, but also about culture, traditions, and life experiences. These interactions taught me that despite our differences in nationality and background, we are united by our passion for learning and collaboration.

My journey to Sri Lanka itself was already memorable. Together with my best buddy, Dr. Nilds San Miguel, I traveled from the Philippines to Malaysia and then onward to Colombo. It was my first time visiting Sri Lanka, formerly known as Ceylon, and I was immediately captivated by its beauty and hospitality. We stayed at the prestigious Taj Samudra Hotel, which offered breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean and the vibrant city of Colombo.

Beyond the academic sessions, I immersed myself in Sri Lankan culture and history. One of the highlights of my trip was experiencing authentic Sri Lankan cuisine. Known for its flavorful curries and unique spices, the food introduced me to tastes that were both new and unforgettable. Through the kindness of our friend Sir Dinesh Austin Joseph, we were able to enjoy local dishes in a cozy restaurant, making the experience even more special.

Another unforgettable experience was our Tuktuk City Tour. Our driver and guide, Ahilan, was not only an excellent driver but also a knowledgeable storyteller who shared fascinating information about Sri Lanka’s history and culture. Through this tour, I visited several iconic places in Colombo, including the Gangaramaya Buddhist Temple, Independence Memorial Hall, Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque, Galle Face Green, Old Parliament Building, and the remarkable Colombo Lotus Tower. Each destination reflected the rich cultural heritage and diversity of Sri Lanka.

As I explored Colombo, I realized that traveling for conferences offers more than professional development. It allows participants to understand cultures, appreciate diversity, and gain experiences that cannot be learned from books alone. The warmth and friendliness of the Sri Lankan people made me feel welcomed throughout my stay. Their hospitality transformed my visit into an experience I will always treasure.

ICOSS 2024 also reminded me of the importance of collaboration in research and education. The conference encouraged scholars from different parts of the world to work together, share ideas, and support one another. This spirit of unity perfectly reflects the quote by Helen Keller: “Alone, we can do so little; together, we can do so much.” Indeed, collaboration among professionals creates opportunities for innovation, growth, and positive change.

What made this experience even more meaningful was realizing that conferences are not only about academic achievement. They are also about human connection. The laughter shared during meals, the conversations between sessions, the photographs taken together, and the stories exchanged with newfound friends became some of the most valuable parts of my journey. These moments reminded me that learning becomes more meaningful when it is shared with others.

Reflecting on my ICOSS 2024 experience fills me with immense gratitude. I am thankful to TIIKM for organizing such a meaningful event that brings together scholars and professionals from around the world. I am grateful to all the people I met, whose kindness and friendship made my stay in Sri Lanka unforgettable. Most importantly, I thank God for granting me the opportunity to travel, learn, connect, and grow both professionally and personally.

To future participants of ICOSS, I encourage you to embrace every opportunity the conference offers—not only inside the conference hall, but also beyond it. Attend the sessions with curiosity, connect with fellow participants sincerely, and immerse yourself in the culture of the host country. You may arrive as strangers, but you will leave with valuable knowledge, cherished friendships, and memories that will stay with you for a lifetime.

For me, ICOSS 2024 was not simply a conference. It was a journey that enriched my mind, touched my heart, and reminded me of the beauty of global collaboration and human connection.
